The ultimate beginners guide to cruising

By Olivia Sandelin | Sep 18, 2017 |

There’s little doubt Australian’s love cruising, 1.3 million set sail in 2016, a number that’s forecast to explode by 20% each year. In fact, it’s so popular 1 in 19 Australians are choosing to holiday on board the comfort of a big ship. If you’re thinking about joining the craze, here’s a few tips to get you started!

Book in advance

Give yourself time to pay off the layby and enjoy the journey, planning and getting ready! Travel can be financially very stressful. The whole purpose of a holiday is to relax, and with our layby travel payment technology you can do exactly that. No finance, no interest and no worries, simply pay off your cruise with small weekly, fortnightly or monthly instalments and you can holiday in no time, with no debt. Booking in advance also helps you to prioritize your finances making saving more achievable.

Select an affordable destination

The world is your oyster, both LayAway cruise partners, P&O and Royal Caribbean offer a selection of destinations year-round ranging from Australia, New Zealand, and even the South Pacific. It’s completely up to you what you want to see, and we will help you get there!

Hot tip: Check your destination against the season you are choosing to travel in, to make sure you get the best of the weather!

Get involved on board

Cruises are a great way to see the world for less. The different activities and events hosted on board are just part of the fun! Our advice to first time cruisers is to get involved! Make sure you try every activity you can. Make the most of what your cruise has on offer and go for it. From live shows to salsa dancing, go-karting, rock-climbing and more, you can never be bored on board… (see what we did there!)

Take advantage of the food

When it comes to the set menu and the all-inclusive food packages on board, order as much or as little as you like! Both P&O and Royal Caribbean cruises offer a wide variety of dining options on board and the best part is, it’s all included in your cruise ticket. Explore the different cuisines each ship has to offer, and indulge in a taste of that real travel experience.

Don’t forget to explore on land too

As tempting as it is to stay on board during your entire cruise, remember what you’re there for… exploring! Whether you decide to book a shore excursion or simply want to give it a go yourself it’s important to see what each destination has to offer.

Hot tip: If you’re looking for a cheaper option, book your own shore excursions by researching other options before you travel. There will be plenty of locals relying on cruise-goers for business, so book before you go!
