If you are looking for a family holiday that caters not just for the kids but also the adults, you can’t go past Jean Michel Cousteau Resort, Fiji.
From the moment we arrived the warm Fijian hospitality embraced us. Greeted with a traditional Fijian dance and an island cocktail, we slipped easily into holiday mode!
The resort is located on Savusavu at Vanua Levu, the second main island of Fiji, just a short 1 hour flight from Nadi Airport.
With only 25 bures at the resort, it never feels too busy and it’s a perfect getaway spot not just for families but also couples. We chose a spacious 2 Bedroom Deluxe Beachfront bure, with a separate bedroom for the kids. The resort is eco-friendly, so don’t expect air-conditioning however the bures are designed to capture the ocean breeze beautifully.
The staff are genuinely friendly, always smiling and eager to help. The resort is surrounded by lush, greenery and swaying palm trees, just beware of falling coconuts! With an adults only pool, 2 kids pools, loads of activities, restaurant, bar and best of all the Bula Kids Club, we were never bored!
JMC is the only resort where each child under 5 get their own nanny for the entire stay! Yes, you read that right. The nannies are wonderful, will follow any routine, and do different activities with the little ones. Children 6 years and over have a buddy, who look after a small group of kids of similar ages.
The kids were always entertained which allowed us to relax and spend some quality time together snorkelling, scuba diving, kayaking, getting a well-deserved massage or most importantly chilling with a cocktail by the pool. Perfect.
We’d have breakfast with the kids and then their nanny would take them off to enjoy the day. We would join them during the day or go on an excursion (the nanny and/or buddy can join if you wish). Then finish off the day with a lovely family dinner. Or, if romance is on the cards, the nannies/buddies stay with the kids until you’ve finished your dinner.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner is included and is served in the main outdoor restaurant. All are a-la-carte, however there is a breakfast buffet which is full of fresh, local produce. Our 10-year-old went on a fishing trip with some of his new friends and they returned with a 45kg yellow fin tuna! It was promptly added to our dinner menu!
For our last day we ventured to a private island for a family picnic. A little paradise only a short boat ride away, where we snorkelled, kayaked on the crystal blue waters and watched the local reef sharks in action!
It was sad to say goodbye to the wonderful people who looked after us, in just a short time they’d become like family. Jean Michel Cousteau really is the perfect family escape.
We now understand why so many return. Why wouldn’t you?
