The 5 Types of People You Meet Travelling

By Thomas Mitchell | Jul 20, 2017 |

We can all agree that travelling is good for the soul. It expands the mind, broadens your horizons and works serious wonders for your Instagram feed. But there’s also another added bonus to hitting the road - you meet some truly interesting people. So if you’re quietly curious about the characters you might come across on your travels, wonder no more.
Consider this your cheat sheet to everyone you’ll meet!

The Story Topper

No matter how many countries you’ve been to, this person has been to more. Not only have they spent a month surfing in Nicaragua, but they’ve also recently returned from building huts in Cambodia. Swapping stories is one of the best parts of travelling, but every time someone tells a tale from the road, The Story Topper jumps in with something better. “Oh I went to Samoa before it became really touristy, just lived with the locals, it was a beautiful experience.” Yawn.

The Fake Philosopher

Possibly rocking dreadlocks and very likely to be carrying a faded copy of the novel, “Shantaram,” The Fake Philosopher believes they’ve tapped into the secrets of the universe. Chances are they’ve been country hopping for some time and along the way, they’ve developed several theories on “life and love.” They’ll then proceed to share these with you over a dinner before suggesting you both go off to get a tribal tattoo. Don’t do it.

The First Timer

With a Lonely Planet guide in one hand and a fresh passport in the other, you can’t help but love The First Timer. Their Kathmandu backpack is so new you can still smell the plastic and they’ll probably latch on to you the moment you show a little interest. The First Timer is harmless but can be hard work, bombarding other travellers with questions in between phoning home every half hour. High chance they’ll ask you where you’re headed next in the hopes of finding a travel buddy.

The Searching for a Second Chancer

Maybe in the midst of a mid-life crisis or perhaps fresh off the back of a marriage breakdown, The Second Chancer is determined to rediscover themselves. Typically a little older than the rest of their fellow travellers, these characters are quick to share the lessons that life has taught them. “So that’s when I realised that I hated being an investment banker and decided to backpack through Bali, age is just a number right?” they’ll say over a few late night beverages. They’re good company for a few days but don’t get overly invested.

The Boho-Couple

Not afraid of public displays of affection, The Boho Couple are passionately in love and they want everyone to know about it. They probably met a few months back while travelling through Hawaii and haven’t left each other's side ever since. With matching tattoos - Life Is A Journey, Take It! - this carefree duo are guaranteed to get under your skin.
While it all might seem rosy at first, it doesn’t take long for the lovers to turn on each other because he wants to go to New Zealand next, but she’s heard that Hong Kong is nice. Either way, give these two a wide berth or you may find yourself sucked into their orbit!
